Avilla Bergin
Avilla BerginHead of Client Relations, Alliance Manchester Business School
I recently stepped up into a Head of Client Relations role for Open Programs at Alliance Manchester Business School, and I was keen to dive deeper into the world of Executive Education and learn from peers and experts in the same field.

Colleagues here at Alliance Manchester Business School have previously attended the Academy and had great things to say, as well as notable career progression afterwards.

Learning from my fellow academy cohort, I was able to listen to expert speakers, take part in hackathons, hear success “how I made it” showcases, and immerse myself in executive education away from my day job.

This space and opportunity allowed for great reflection and evaluation — a much-needed pause in busy times.

I see the program as a way to sharpen my leadership abilities, deepen my understanding of complex business issues, and learn from a diverse group of colleagues across the UNICON community.

The in-person module in Washington (Team Development Conference 2025) was a standout moment, especially our work on innovation. I’m also really looking forward to the mentoring component, which I expect will be a valuable part of the journey.

I joined the UNICON Leadership Academy to meet peers from other institutions, learn more about the executive education business beyond my school (to get a bigger picture), and to develop and learn.

I’m hoping to gain new meaningful connections, learn more about the business, and explore what new path I could take.

Highlights so far have been Purpose Driven Leadership and the face-to-face gathering in Washington — especially the workshop on creating a solution leveraging AI — as well as getting a better view of our evolving landscape and the impacts many factors have on our business.

I chose to join the UNICON Leadership Academy because I recognized that the Executive Education landscape is undergoing rapid change, and I want to be equipped to lead effectively within that evolution. My early experiences attending UNICON conferences and participating in Coffee Groups opened my eyes to the global challenges and opportunities shaping our field, and they motivated me to pursue deeper development.

Although I have nearly 15 years of experience in education, I am still relatively new to Executive Education and to leadership roles. As I transition into broader operational and strategic responsibilities, I want to strengthen my foundational leadership skills—particularly in managing people, identifying meaningful metrics, and contributing to long-term planning.

The Purpose-Driven Leader module helped me clarify why I lead and how purpose shapes culture and direction—something I’m still growing into as a new leader.

This is a unique opportunity to meet peer from across the globe and have the chance to share best practice as well as challenges. The power of the collective mind and how we enrich each other is undeniable.

The Academy has already shown to me how varied the backgrounds and experiences are and how we learn from each other. We push boundaries, challenge and provoke, share and learn at the same time. The peer network that is being developed in the process is priceless.

Meeting most of the members in person was a definite highlight. Being able to connect on a personal level while also discussing professional matters with understanding peers—each contributing valuable insights—felt genuine and meaningful.

I decided to join the Leadership Academy after it was highly recommended by several colleagues and aligned well with my interest in continuing to grow as a leader. The opportunity to learn alongside peers in Executive Education and gain new perspectives felt like a valuable investment in my professional development.

The highlight of the Academy so far has been connecting with a diverse group of professionals across the Executive Education industry. Learning from others’ experiences and approaches has provided practical insights and fresh perspectives that I can immediately bring back to my role.

While I’m not new to higher education, I’m relatively new to the executive education industry. I’m hoping to do a lot of external benchmarking and peer best-practice sharing with other ULA members to better understand organisational structures, pain points, and successes across the community.

The highlight so far has definitely been the day prior to the Team Development Conference. We had a rich, interactive day of learning in small groups, and it allowed us to truly act as a cohort.

With assuming this new role as a business unit manager, coming from years in a for-profit, corporate world, I needed to expand my network and acquire knowledge about this industry—its players, customers, competitors, etc. The hope is that the UNICON Leadership Academy would make me a better, more impactful leader of the team, and a more effective one for the customer.

I’m hoping to meet my peers, share stories, compare notes about the market and the ecosystem, and learn from each other in a very practical way.

I really liked the initial session about purpose and UVP. It made me zoom out, inspired me, and gave me some ammunition and inspiration to talk about this subject to my team. I also enjoyed the last session on the natural tension between marketing and sales, custom and open, and the funnel of functions aiming at generating growth. I still find it a pity that I missed the conference in Washington DC, but I’m making the best of it in the online format. Kudo’s on facilitation and finding the right balance between lectures, breakouts and Q+A.
